The picture that you see is my bokken. To the unfamiliar, a bokken is a wooden stick shaped like a katana though it can also take other forms like a tanto or a wakizashi. This is used for kenjutsu training. Instead of using real swords that poses a lot of dangers, a bokken is used instead.
Why do I have a bokken? Well you see, ever since I was a little kid, I always have had this fascination for swords. As I was growing up, this fascination never left me. So I tried to seek for schools here in Davao that taught this art. Unfortunately, I did not find any.
However, when I was given the chance to study at the University of San Carlos in Cebu, I gave my search another whirl in this uncharted territory. I explored Cebu City for many days. I found training places for judo, aikido, karate but not for kenjutsu. But there was one aikido practitioner in one of the dojos I visited who told me that there was somebody in Cebu who teaches kenjutsu. And then he said that the guy is a teacher in the University of San Carlos. "WTF?! I exhaustingly roamed around Cebu City and the one I have been looking for was right under my nose!" The next day I searched for this teacher and I finally caught up to him late in the afternoon. Gathering all the courage I had I approached him and inquired about kenjutsu. He told me that he had no proper dojo although the university lets him use the judo practice area. I then asked him if I could train with him. I can sense that he was hesitant at first but then he blurted, "adto sa judo gym ugma 5 pm. naa ba ky gi?" and since I didn’t have one he told me, "pagdala na lng ug white shirt and jogging pants"

“Sampung mga daliri, patay ang isa…” This has been my theme song for the last two weeks. You see, two weeks ago, something unfortunate happened - my left middle finger “died” so to speak.
It was one fine afternoon. We, Didai, Mishel and yours truly, decided to go to DMC to inquire about their training. As we were loading our stuff inside Mishel’s pick-up truck. Didai sat in the backseat then WHAM! she closes the door. For a second there my mind shut down. Then pain from my left middle finger surged through my brain. As an instinctive reaction I tried shaking my left hand and there it was, blood splattering all over the place - the window, the floor, my shirt. I went directly to the faucet and tried to wash the blood off and there I saw that the the flesh underneath my nail came out. The blood just won’t stop from oozing out so I had to apply pressure on it.
We went directly to the clinic of my uncle just a few minutes away from where we were. Unfortunately when we arrived there was no doctor on duty that day. So I decided to take care of meddy (the name of the middle finger. yes! we gave it a name after the incident) myself. Using a knife (blade + scalpel) and nail cutter, I removed parts of my nail to expose the wound and the protruding flesh. After an hour or so, “the operation” was successful with the help of my scrub nurse Didai and videographer/ photographer Mishel.
A day after the accident I had to make some adjustments. As a web content writer, I needed all of my fingers to be functional. It took me quite some time to get used to typing without using my left middle finger. As of now, the finger’s healing fine… I guess… in a week or two, I might be able to use it again normally.
You can view some of the pictures Mishel took after the jump. It’s kinda graphic so for those who faint at the slightest sight of blood don’t click the link.

It’s only in December that the barkada gets to have the complete cast gathered - well, almost complete cast. One of the biggest gathering last year 2007 was during the birthday of Jimm. One H + Food + Alcohol + Poker… it just can’t get any better than that. As Sdna would say… nuff said~♪

A new weekly periodical called The Edge has been launched in Davao. Most of the topics in it are related to businesses as well as e-commerce specifically in Davao City. Copies of The Edge can only be acquired on chosen establishments all over the city. However, I am fortunate enough to receive a copy every week since my tita works for them.
When I woke up yesterday mid-morning (Monday), a new copy of the paper has already been delivered to my room. I browsed through the pages to see if there are any interesting topics. I was just flipping through the pages until I reached the Events section - indeed I found something interesting.

What the hell?! That’s David (1H) together with his girlfriend April. They were in this event called Black Valentine’s sponsored by Clear. It’s not that I was shocked or anything but I was just not expecting to see him in this business periodical. Huy Dabid! Sikat na man ka bordy! Hehe
